The five major rules
are simple.
No public magic.
-
.At times the world is
simple, magic and mundane realms are far from each other. At times the world
is simple, magic and mundane are the same. Most of the time there is some
distance, but it isn't complete. Since the middle of the Dark Ages, the magic
world has been far away, with some contact. The Paris of the French is different
from the Isle de France of the Sidhe Court. The same place, but far apart.
-
Part of living in the
mundane world is not letting the magic world bleed over. For a variety of
reasons, the magic world is known as the hidden realm and at this time, in
this place, for the most part needs to stay that way. So, strangeness is
hidden by glamour, magic is not displayed in public, and the Weekly World
remains what most people think of magic.
-
There are powerful forces
who have decided that this is the way the world will be. Live within their
strictures.
.
No violence except in
self-defense.
-
Most magical realm creatures
have blood enemies, by tradition as well as by personal history. In the realms,
many of these attack each other on sight. Or at least tell their children's
children to attack each other on sight should they ever meet. Some things
go without saying. See a vampire, slay a vampire. But that does not apply
to those of us within the realm of the two kings or attending school.
-
Several reasons. First,
many blood feuds survive because the parties do not have any contact. The
Sidhe Seelie King of Paris could easily go to war with the Trollking of
Stockholm, but they have not gone to war for about four or five hundred years.
Yes, they have a blood feud, but no, it isn't as serious as it sounds. The
same is true of many feuds. Even if you have a real blood feud, not here,
not now. It is part of the deal of entering the realm of the five kings and
of being accepted to university.
-
Finally, you may not
be anywhere near as likely to win as you think.
-
Oh, of course your
family/clan/sept/nation/etc. will be shamed and disgraced by you, it might
start a war and cost your side allies, and there could be other complications,
including your being banished and expelled, but those were all explained
to you before you came. The rules are real and they are serious.
.
No assumptions.
-
.Do not assume that what
you've been told about the world, blood feuds or yourself is necessarily
true. Do not assume the extent of your own strength or power of your own
magic.
-
Also do not assume the
level of your own importance. You may be the Sun King's Heir and the Year
King Designate and if you break the local law you will sit in a local jail
until the sentence is complete. No one has diplomatic immunity who is a student
here (your parents or guardians waived it as a part of your application
process).
-
Further, like most human
congregations, this place has a city spirit with a hrythgr and the rules
are inflexible, sudden and powerful. Do not assume you can violate the peace
of this place against that spirit any more safely than you can drink
balefire.
.
No risks.
-
.Usually, at this point
in the lesson I introduce the class to automobiles on the road outside. Most
of them are more than a ton of cold iron. We had a Rock Troll of the Haverland
Tribe who thought to show the class just how powerful his magic was. The
Mercedes 550SL he stepped in front of drove through him like smoke. There
are many surprises of that type, from firecrackers (they disrupt magic) to
the incredible mass of cold iron that permeates this part of the world.
-
Do not risk getting pregnant,
do not risk the local drugs, do not invoke the wrath of the local kings or
police. Do not try any magical effects outside of the appropriate classes.
The school wants you to make it alive and unmaimed to graduation.
.
No Chaos.
-
You may be unformed,
unshaped or unliving, but under no circumstances are you to use, manifest,
shape or share chaos on campus or with your fellow students. Yes, the
last Bitter King was chaos tainted, but the current one is not.
-
There are those who hunt
chaos, some of them stronger than the two kings acting together. None of
them will hunt you unless you break this rule. Once one of them picks you
as lawful prey outside of the rules, nothing can save you. Given the
way many chaos touched students have acted, there are very few who will care
and many who will help them.
-
No chaos.
