More on Supplements Part Two

The last of the supplements you will see with positive discussions is L-Carnitine..

Why do I seem so ambivalent about supplements?  Simply put, many are dangerous.  Even worse, many more do nothing and drain your attention and your pocket book.  My mother was appalled when she found out that the guru she was reading had a supplement routine.  He took fish oil and calcium -- nothing else.  He might sell hundreds of dollars a month in supplements to his subscribers, but a trip to Costco and thirty dollars would probably last him months.  I am not convinced that supplements will do you good.  Weight lifting?  Sure, and it is great exercise. But the supplements?  Too many very successful lifters use fish oil and nothing else, or not even the fish oil (it works for me to massively lower my triglycerides, but for other people I know doesn't do much).

Now, do some supplements work for some people?  Absolutely!

Do I use some supplements?  Yes, some fish oil, some vitamin C right before I go to sleep (it helps me sleep better due to matters that have nothing to do with most people's metabolisms), a little zinc (which we don't get in our diets here).  I play with other things from time to time and I obviously think about them (or you wouldn't have these essays on them).

But, I agree with those who talk about the dangerous nature of some of them (meet someone who has gotten heavy metal poisoning from selenium) and the useless nature of others.

On books:  go to your library, use interlibrary loan, and you can order almost anything.  You should never buy a martial arts book until you've read it twice for free.
